About Us

The South East’s Leading Earthworks and Muck Away Contractor

Officially founded in 1972 as Penfold Public Works, our business took its present form in 2005 when Penfold Public Works merged with the long-standing family firm G. W. Verrall & Son. That partnership combined two proud track records and has since powered almost two decades of steady expansion, establishing Penfold Verrall as one of the most recognisable names in large-scale earthworks and muck-away contracting across the South-East.

After the merger, the blue of Penfold and the yellow of Verrall united in a striking livery that became a fixture on construction sites throughout Sussex, Surrey, Kent, and beyond. In 2024 we went back to our Penfold roots, rolling out a modernised all-blue fleet, honouring our heritage while signalling a refreshed identity for the years ahead.

Backed by a substantial inventory of heavy plant (excavators up to 40 tonnes, dozers, dump trucks, mobile crushers and screeners) and a large fleet of tippers and grabs, we can self-deliver every element of bulk excavation, earthmoving, and muck-away. Operating from multiple disposal facilities and our own inert-recycling yard, we provide fast, reliable, and competitively priced services throughout East and West Sussex, Surrey, and parts of Hampshire and Kent.

Whether it’s a technically challenging cut-and-fill, a high-volume muck-away package, a standalone muck-away service, or the complete restoration of a former quarry or landfill, Penfold Verrall brings the specialist plant, the skilled people, and the proven track record to deliver safely, compliantly, and on programme.

Restoration and Land-raising

With a substantial tipper fleet and a dedicated Earthworks division operating heavy plant, including excavators up to 40 tonnes, dozers, and dump trucks, all run by experienced and accredited personnel, diversifying into the field of landfill restoration and land-raising schemes was a natural progression for the business. This move not only broadened our service offering but also provided operational certainty for our muck away activities by securing year-round access to compliant and controlled tipping facilities.

This capability also allows us to self-deliver complex earthworks schemes that require both bulk excavation and high-volume muck away without the need to outsource additional assets or facilities. Over the years, we’ve completed a range of major projects involving challenging materials management, site profiling, and full regulatory compliance. Our experience spans the restoration of former quarries and landfill sites, as well as large-scale land-raising schemes including golf course and polo pitch construction, airfield improvements, and brownfield regeneration projects across the South-east.

Recycling

In 2017, we opened our Dial Post Recycling Facility — a major investment in the future of sustainable construction and a key part of our long-term strategy to reduce environmental impact across the industry.

The site is equipped with multiple crushing and screening plants, supported by a dedicated fleet of loading shovels and excavators operated by our in-house team. These resources allow us to efficiently process a wide range of inert arisings into high-quality recycled aggregates suitable for reuse across construction and civil engineering projects.

By diverting material away from landfill and reintroducing it into the supply chain, we help our clients achieve their sustainability goals while also offering a cost-effective alternative to primary aggregates. Whether as part of a full earthworks package or as a standalone aggregate supply, our recycling operations form a key part of our commitment to delivering smarter, greener construction solutions.

Growth and people

Our business has grown year on year, driven by continuous investment in both equipment and people. We’re backed by a highly experienced senior management team, supported by operations and contracts managers, a health & safety and environmental compliance lead, skilled workshop engineers, and a dedicated admin team, all working together to support the efforts of our drivers and site operatives.

We are fully licensed waste carriers and operate to the highest standards of environmental and regulatory compliance.
